CHANEL is probably the most respected “Maison de Couture” in the world. Its timeless elegance and refined creations make it the ultimate ambassador of the “chic à la française”.
Indeed, the Chanel woman is a mix of classic elegance and modernity. She’s always very stylish, but she’s also fierce and independant. The Chanel woman loves to play with contrasts, mixing different styles in the most elegant way.
CHANEL : DESIGNED BY A WOMAN FOR WOMEN
Chanel was founded in 1910 by Gabrielle Chanel.
Coco Chanel like she prefered to be called was a fierceless and independent woman who shook up the codes to become one of the most successful business women in the world.
How is it so important ? Because, Coco Chanel helped women freeing themselves from the patriarchal rules by leading the way. When she created Chanel, women didn’t even have the right to vote. They didn’t have their own money and basically they were their husband’s property.
Coco Chanel pushed the boundaries and created a new idea of femininity. Thanks to her, the dress became shorter and the clothes more comfortable. Coco Chanel brought a new kind of feminine fashion that still relevant today. Her style became timeless and unforgettable. After the first World War, Coco Chanel expanded her empire to design hats, clothing, bags and perfumes.
CHANEL : THE MODERN YEARS
In 1983, Chanel hires Karl Lagerfeld as its artistic director. His forward thinking sense of style will bring a touch of modernity to Chanel, helping the brand flourished within the 21st century. Karl Lagerfeld will remain the Chanel artistic director until his death in 2019.
Virginie Viard has the heavy task to replace the most iconic designer that Chanel has ever known. This season, she presented her first creations for the house of Chanel and the least we can say is that she channeled the spirit of Coco Chanel to create a classic and elegant collection which is going back to the roots of Chanel DNA.
In this article, we’re going to talk about the best dresses from the Cruise and spring & summer collections. Take a nice cup of tea and enjoy the ride through the timeless elegance of the Chanel house. 😉

MODEL GIGI HADID AT THE 2020 SPRING CHANEL SHOW
Gigi Hadid walks once again for Chanel Haute Couture, under late Karl Lagerfeld’s successor Virginie Viard’s creative direction.
The 2020 spring/summer show was inspired by the convent of Aubazine where Coco Chanel spent most of her childhood. Indeed, the collection features sober-colored gowns, with Peter Pan collars and other references to the religious atmosphere in which Gabriel Chanel grew up.
Gigi Hadid wore a long black belted dress split open to reveal lots of thighs which reminded us of a sexy nun. However, the sexy vibe brought by the color black and the large middle split contrasted with the white stockings and white socks paired with black flat shoes and a white Peter Pan collars.
I personally had the image of Mercredi Addams when I saw this dress. Indeed, the dark makeup and plated hair give to the overall look a strong gothic vibe.
MODEL KAIA GERBER AT THE 2020 SPRING CHANEL SHOW
Dressed in a lace A-line dress topped with a pure black gauze veil, Kaia Gerber was the sensation of the 2020 spring/summer haute couture fashion show in Paris.

This collection is indeed a tribute to Coco Chanel youth and this dress screams freshness and delicatessen.
We also love the strapless, heart neckline white dress with a surprising black veil delicately laying on her shoulders.
The overall look is very classic yet modern in the same time. Everything is about contrast in this look ! The pure white lace contrast with the black veil while the black flats are contrasted with the usual high heels we can see on fashion shows. The plated hair and the smoky eyes finish breaking the schoolgirl vibe to make this look very contemporary.

“Fifty shades of Gray” is the nickname given to Virginie Viard’s summer collection. Indeed, the new artistic director of the house of Chanel has decided that gray is the new summer trendy color !
Some people complained about the lack of colors in this new summer collection. But we have to admit that this an ankle-length tweed dress is absolutely stunning.
We love the simple tied detail at the front and the demure high neck. We also loved how the chic black sequined belt puts the focus on the waist, discreetly emphasizing the feminine silhouette.

First Virginie Viards avoids all the cliché of the classic floral dress by using dark and muted colors which make this dress more classy and elegant – the perfect red carpet dress !
Then, she plays with the length which is a bit shorter than the classic long dress, it gives a more contemporary look and let the shoes shine through.
Finally, she plays with different fabrics to give a floaty and modern vibe to this original dress. The strapless top looks like it has real flowers stitched on it – the perfect way to give volume to a petite frame.
This overall results in a very feminine and elegant dress with a touch of modernity. I bet, we’ll see this dress on the red carpets really soon.

We loved the high neck collar which accentuates the neck with its delicate lace details.
We also loved the ankle length which reveals some black and white booties which remind us of the Victorian Era.
Here, Virginie Viard plays again with the contrast between classic and modernity, using a fabric which was more commonly used for underwear to contrast with the Victorian vibe brought by the booties.
The plated hair and smoky eyes finish breaking the too classic look, giving the overlook a darker and modern vibe.

WEDDING DRESS FROM THE 2020 SPRING COLLECTION
There is no fashion show without a wedding dress ! This year people were really surprised with Chanel new interpretation of the bridal dress.
The return of the midi dress ! Virginie Viard presented a modern take on the classic bride for the Chanel Spring 2020 Haute Couture collection.
We loved the pleated skirt which fell just below the knee, while the simplicity of the long sleeves and high neckline was contrasted with an exquisitely embellished veil showcasing the craftsmanship of the Chanel Métiers d’Arts house, Lesage. The black patent leather shoes added a welcome boyish allure to the final look. Again, we have the combination of white stockings and white socks.
The overall look was really modern yet still romantic with a simple fresh makeup and a ballerina bun. This look has the same spirit as the one spotted on Kaia Gerber ; wise but strongly contemporary, classic but original. This is a perfect wedding dress for a modern bride who likes elegance and simplicity.
With a mix of classic elegance and modernity, Virginie Viard embodies a new era where women can be feminine and chic while wearing simple clothing. Indeed, we were quite surprised to see models walking on the catwalk with minimum makeup and no accessory. But with this bold choice Virginie Viard applied the rule of less is more, and we have to admit that the lack of accessory put all the spotlight on the dresses.
We could argue on the minimalist vibe omnipresent in this collection but overall we have to say that dresses were very well-designed and wereable which is quite appreciating.
